Decision science is the science of making decisions. Casually speaking there is an optimal decision taken by the decision makers in different fields of life. For example the field or issue may be a social, political, educational, governmental or commercial one. The main thing is to take a timely decision in every field in order to derive maximum positive results.
Decision science is a basic component of living and, therefore, an interesting subject for decision and investigation. Several fields in science are involved with the nature of different aspects of decision making. There are various types of decision making and all types are equally intriguing. For example, how do people react when they are threatened? Which market would be most profitable? What will be the result of the campaign? What will be the best solution of a particular problem?
In the field of decision science, while making decisions one has to consider the following points:

  • The information about the past and current situation.

  • The key facts and figures influenced by the decisions.

  • The conclusion or results drawn from the decision making process.

The process of reaching decisions may be difficult because the decisions themselves are complex and comprise many sub-decisions, which should be taken in the right order. Also there are number of persons, departments and other groups involved, each having their own interests, constraints, and ambitions. In such cases decision theory, decision analysis and decision support system can be helpful.
Now the question arises, how cans a person or a group of people can implement this procedure in their daily life, while making decision? It is considered necessary that first of all one should know the problem by analyzing what he desires and what exists now? In this way he sets the decision criterion.
Secondly, he should point out all possible alternatives by judging what would happen with each alternative and its effect on the particular problem? In doing so he will be smooth enough to make a decision from amongst the possible available alternatives. Once the decision is made it should have the plan for communicating those directly and indirectly affected.
Thirdly, it is necessary to have the feed back of the outcome of the decision. It is to determine whether or not the problem has been resolved?

The department is involved in/planning for the following activities in the centre:
  • To learn the suitability and performance of various models and computer simulations

  • Tailoring of the existing models for regional requirements.

  • Development of new physical as well as non-physical models and computer simulations.

  • Take part in the policy management and decision making procedures in support to big decisions based on the research conclusions.

  • Awareness dissemination to the laymen regarding the key issues under study of the centre and their possible scenarios help them supporting in their own interests.
