Objectives

The objectives of GCISC are to monitor the current and the likely future global trends in areas such as climate, water, food, agriculture, evironment, biodiversity, health and energy etc., and scientifically determine their impacts on Pakistan. An important function of the Centre is to develop manpower that is capable of participating in international efforts to understand the Global Change phenomenon. The Centre will work to increase the awareness of the scientific community, the policy planners and the public in the country about Global Change and related activities.

In line with the directives of the Prime Minister the present focus of the Centre’s research effort is on (a) assessment of the impact of Global Climate Change on the key socio-economic sectors of Pakistan , in particular Water and Agriculture, and (b) identification of appropriate adaptation measures to cope with the negative impacts. For this, capacity is being built within the Centre as well as in collaborating national organizations to modify, adapt and make use of the state-of-the-art computer simulation models and other mathematical modeling techniques to make projections of expected climate changes in Pakistan over the coming decades in consonance with the generally agreed global level climate scenarios and to evaluate the corresponding impacts on the water inflows of our rivers and productivity of various crops.

Briefly speaking, the main objectives of the Centre are:

  • To keep a track of the current and likely future trends of global change (climate change, technological change etc.)
  • To analyse and evaluate their likely impacts on the socio-economic development in Pakistan
  • To identify how science and technology may be called upon to cope with the adverse impacts, if any, and to advise national planners on the appropriate strategic approaches
  • To enhance national capacity for Global Change research
  • To raise public awareness of Global Change related issues
